In the autonomous community, a criminal group was arrested, whose members organized robberies of elderly people while they were withdrawing cash from ATMs. According to preliminary estimates, the total damage caused by illegal actions of intruders is about 21 thousand euros.
It is noted that the regional police detained four people aged from 19 to 63 years. Currently, a case has been opened against the fifth member of the gang for suspicion of theft and fraud with bank cards of elderly people.
When withdrawing money from ATMs in various cities of the province, criminals used the "seeding" method. So, while an elderly person was withdrawing money, one of the group members watched the PIN code being entered, then distracted the victim and stole the card.
To distract attention, they used the method of throwing a bill on the ground and saying that it allegedly fell out of the victim's pocket. The moment the victim leaned over, the criminal instantly stole the card. After that, one of the group members went to the nearest ATM to withdraw money or make purchases, while other attackers distracted witnesses of the incident.
In total, the group committed 12 thefts in Barcelona, Argenton, Badalona, L'hospitalete de Llobregat, Mataro, Reus and Girona in three months. In total, they managed to seize about 21 thousand euros.
It is reported that the investigation began in January amid a significant increase in the number of such crimes. Five suspects were identified by police using ATM surveillance cameras.
Regional law enforcement agencies continue to investigate the case and allow new arrests.
