Fraudsters masterfully take advantage of the weaknesses and slowness of business, stealing money from the owners and counterparties of companies, said lawyer Roman Bubnov.
Corporate executives often underestimate criminals, believing that cyber scammers only hunt individuals. They focus on the "weak areas" of legal entities, such as a large number of financial transactions conducted on a daily basis. The kidnappers expect that dubious payments will simply not be noticed. Also, the business is often excessively bureaucratic and even if the loss of funds is noticed on time, it takes a long time to take the right legal steps.
"Among the reasons we should highlight the following: the financial attractiveness of the business, this is an increased response time to theft facts due to regulated internal communications, this is the complexity of detecting theft facts due to active financial activity and high turnover, this is the large number of the company's staff and this is the potential opportunity to obtain information for limited access," Bubnov said. XX International Scientific and Practical Conference "Kovalev Readings".
Car sharing and cashback services
The lawyer's office was contacted by representatives of a large car-sharing service – scammers created an ingenious scheme for registering fake users, stealing vehicles and then reselling cars.
"Malefactors, having created accounts for third parties, illegally seized, and then sold at an inflated cost more than 100 cars of our principal. The total material damage caused by the crime exceeded 200 million rubles," Bubnov said.
The defender also gave an example of fraud, in which attackers obtained the digital signature of a large retailer and remotely executed about two dozen transactions on its behalf. As a result of criminal actions, the company owed more than 146 million rubles to its counterparties, the speaker noted.
The lawyer warns that malefactors ask business owners and managers for money for getting into the register of verified suppliers, arguing that it will be easier for the paying company to win the tender. He also spoke about a group of hackers who attacked the largest operator of passenger and cargo transportation in Russia and its partner bank. "The attackers were able to withdraw and cash out the funds received as cashback for the purchase of services, and hand over the tickets," the lawyer said.
