The US Department of Defense has predicted the strategy for the development of AI in the Middle Kingdom for the next decade.

In a recent report, the US Department of Defense, based at the Pentagon, warned that China is aiming for leadership in artificial intelligence in order to study enemy vulnerabilities and promote the concept of "intellectualized warfare."

The report says that China is already a global leader in certain AI use cases, such as facial recognition and natural language processing, and Chinese companies are successfully selling domestically-made AI chips to the world.

"While China continues to depend on certain foreign components for the production of AI equipment, Chinese researchers continue to explore new materials and design concepts for next-generation semiconductors," the Pentagon said.

The report also indicates that China has assigned artificial intelligence the status of a priority area of national development of science and technology. According to US intelligence, Beijing believes that progress in AI is key to "intellectualized warfare," the Chinese concept of future military confrontation.

This is not the first time that the US government has expressed its concerns about the use of AI technologies by potential military opponents. So, the CIA's director of artificial intelligence, Lakshmi Raman, recently said that the agency is closely monitoring the Chinese AI program and is concerned about the possible application of such technologies in practice.
