Let's consider each element of a bank card and its purpose.
The background image on the standard card is chosen by the bank. In some banks, for a small amount, you can choose a card design by uploading your picture or photo. The main thing is not to violate copyright.
1. Card number
The card number can have 13, 15, 16, 18 and even 19 digits. The most common option is 16 digits.
Your card number and your account number are not the same thing. Several cards can be issued to one account.
2. Payment system logo
In addition to the logo of the payment system, the card may contain the logo of the issuer and / or partner company.
Cards can be co-branded (that is, joint bank cards with one or several partner companies) or co-branded (joint cards are usually of two payment systems). There will be more logos on these cards.
3. Bank name
The card indicates the name of the issuing bank that issued the card. The payment card is the property of the bank. Legally, the bank's clients are account holders and cardholders.
4. Card validity period
The card has an expiration date - usually from one to five years. The month and year of expiry of the card are indicated on its front side in the “month / year” format (the last two digits). If your card says 03/24, it will be valid until March 31, 2024 inclusive.
5. Name of the cardholder
The name of the cardholder is indicated (or embossed, that is, squeezed out) on the card in Latin letters. Cards can be both named and unnamed (in this case, the name of the holder is not indicated on the card).
6. Chip
Built-in microprocessor that contains information about the card and its holder. A chip is needed to identify a client when he uses a payment card at an ATM or terminal.
7. Magnetic stripe
The magnetic stripe (like the chip) contains information about the card and its holder. You need to be more careful with it - the card can be demagnetized if it is stored incorrectly. The card must not be heated or left near working electrical appliances.
Some Bank has banned banks from issuing cards only with a magnetic stripe - all cards must have a chip for secure payments. You can still find cards with a magnetic stripe without a chip - these are cards that were issued before the beginning and are still valid.
8. Payment system hologram
One of the ways to protect a card from counterfeiting is a hologram. The hologram can also be located on the front side of the card.
9. Signature strip
On the back of the payment card there is a strip for a sample signature of its holder. Sign the card when you receive it, without the signature of the holder, the card is invalid. Some cards are issued without a signature strip.
10. Authentication code
It is also called CVV (Card Verification Value) or CVC (Card Validation Code) - the abbreviation depends on the payment system within which the card is issued. Thanks to this code, you can make purchases over the Internet with greater security.
11. Bank data
The card contains the phone number of the bank that issued the card and its address. Write down this information and keep it handy. You need to contact the bank at the phone number indicated on the card, if, for example, you lose your card and you have to urgently block it.
