A resident of Florida, Maria Vaca, filed a lawsuit against Google demanding compensation for more than $5 million lost through a fraudulent crypto application from the Google Play store. This is reported by The Block.

From February to July 2023, the woman invested about $4.6 million in digital assets through the Yobit Pro program. When the app showed a balance of $7 million, Waka tried to withdraw funds.

In response, she received a message about the need to pay $500,000 in "taxes". After paying the amount, she was asked for another $2 million.

When Waka refused to transfer the additional ransom, she received " [ ... ] WhatsApp messages from unknown cybercriminals threatening to kill her if she didn't make the deposit."

After that, the woman contacted law enforcement and the Bureau of Consumer Protection in the Field of Finance, which immediately forwarded her complaint to Google. According to the lawsuit, it took the tech giant another three months to remove Yobit Pro from the store.

According to the American woman, she downloaded the app because she was sure that Google was preventing questionable offers for users.

"As a result of significant misrepresentations and other fraudulent actions by Google, Ms. Waka suffered significant damage, including, but not limited to, financial losses of more than $5, serious emotional and psychological suffering, and the loss of the real estate business that she tried to build for most of her adult life," the report said. the claim.

The complaint notes that, presumably, about 12,760 users of Android devices installed Yobit Pro through Google Play, and at least five faced a similar situation.
