Who is responsible for such a large number of cyber attacks?
The growing efforts of law enforcement agencies and investigators cannot contain the threat of online ransomware operations. The number of victims is increasing, and new cybercrime groups are showing high motivation to achieve their malicious goals.
According to a recently published report by the NCC Group, last September set a record for the number of operations using ransomware software. So, in September, 514 attacks were recorded, which is 32% more than in August of this year. And in comparison with the same period in 2022, the number of incidents increased by as much as 153%.
In their last report, NCC Group experts suggested that by the end of this year, the ransomware attack counter may slightly exceed 4,000, but researchers already know about 3,500 incidents. This indicator is likely to significantly exceed the projected values by the end of the year.
Among the most active groups involved in ransomware attacks in September 2023, the leadership is occupied by the following::
The NCC Group paid special attention to the RansomedVC group. This group started its activity only in August 2023 and introduced a new approach to extortion methods based on fabricated fake reports of GDPR fines related to network vulnerabilities. It was RansomedVC that previously claimed responsibility for breaching Sony's networks in September.
The NCC Group report also indicates that the most frequently attacked sectors in September were:
The growing number of ransomware cyberattacks demonstrates that criminals are not afraid of law enforcement agencies and are finding new ways to attack companies.
To protect themselves, organizations must pay close attention to cybersecurity — regularly update software, make data backups, and train employees. Only a comprehensive approach will reduce the risk of becoming a victim of extortionate groups.
