We discuss how changing standards affects the quality and availability of information.

In the modern world, people are increasingly faced with the problem of excessive content length on the Internet. Recipe bloggers often make lengthy introductions about their personal experiences, and podcast episodes and streaming shows can stretch to the size of full-length movies. Social networks that initially focused on short messages are also expanding the limits: for example, on the X platform, users can post up to 25,000 characters, while YouTube has increased the maximum video length to 12 hours, and TikTok is testing a limit of 15 minutes for some content creators.

This phenomenon is explained not only by the interest of the audience, but also by the desire of authors to maximize their income and increase engagement indicators. On TikTok, for example, creators sometimes artificially lengthen their videos or divide them into several parts to increase views. This behavior is a consequence of the work of algorithms that are aimed at finding and promoting content, but at the same time create incentives for the production of voluminous and not always high-quality material.

In 2019, a YouTube user found that videos longer than 10 minutes generated three times more revenue. A TikTok representative said that in 2023, creators of long-format content doubled their revenue compared to the previous year. Content selection algorithms can sometimes prioritize length as a quality indicator, but the exact mechanisms of their operation are often unknown.

Content creators work with limited information, trying to please algorithms, and sometimes quickly adapt to changes in platform requirements. Experts fear that with the development of generative artificial intelligence, the Internet may be overflowing with low-quality content.

However, the length of the material should not determine its quality. As noted by high-quality authors and video creators, each story should determine its own length independently, taking exactly as much time as it takes to tell it.

Thus, we see how modern technologies and the desire to monetize content lead to a change in the format and length of informational materials on the Internet. This is a matter of concern for experts, who say that the quality and informative content should remain a priority, rather than its volume and duration.
