Who is behind this and what are the consequences?

This week, the Ministry of Health and Social Protection of Colombia, the judiciary and the Supervisory Authority of Industry and Trade announced serious problems in their work due to a cyber attack on the technology provider IFX Networks Colombia.

On Wednesday, representatives of the Ministry of Health reported difficulties after IFX Networks notified them of problems affecting their data center. "Due to a cybersecurity incident, it is impossible to access applications used to fulfill our mission and provide services at the national level," the ministry said.

This ministry plays a key role in shaping the country's health policy, coordinates public health activities and provides support to citizens.

On Thursday evening, a message appeared on the website of the judicial authority about the termination of work due to the attack on IFX. As a result of the attack, the country's Supreme Court suspended all hearings from September 14 to 20.

The Supervisory Authority of Industry and Trade, which is responsible for protecting consumer rights and regulating market competition, also confirmed the attack and suspended some operations until the end of the week.

Local media outlets report problems with the technology in other government agencies. However, the exact number of affected organizations is unknown.

While no ransomware group has publicly claimed responsibility for the incident, cybersecurity researchers from the site elHacker.net provided images indicating possible involvement of the RansomHouse group in the attack on IFX Networks.

An adviser to the Colombian President, Saul Cattan, called the attack "the largest on infrastructure in Colombia in recent years" and criticized the legislature for its lack of decisiveness on cybersecurity issues.

The attack occurred at the same time that the National Security Council of the United States called on governments of different countries not to give in to hackers demands and not to pay ransomware.
