The cyberattack paralyzed more than 300 banks in the country.
More than 300 banks in India stopped operating for a day due to a ransomware attack. Millions of users were unable to conduct transactions through the popular payment systems UPI, IMPS, NEFT and RTGS.
The situation affected only cooperative and rural regional banks, as their main service provider, C — Edge Technologies, was hit. There are about 1,500 co-op and rural regional banks in India, mostly serving customers in remote areas, a fifth of which were affected by the attack.
The attack occurred on July 31 and made C-Edge Technologies ' banking infrastructure unavailable. The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) quickly responded to the problem by temporarily isolating C-Edge Technologies from the retail payment system. This decision also led to the suspension of online services for banks that were not directly affected by the attack.
Already on August 1, the banks resumed their work. The investigation of the incident revealed that the attack did not extend to the systems of creditors and was limited to C-Edge systems. Affected banks will be able to resume payments via the United Payments Interface and other NPCI-managed payment systems.
According to CloudSEK, the attack affected Brontoo Technology Solutions, a key partner of C-Edge Technologies, and was carried out by RansomEXX ransomware group.
