In the fall of 2022, a resident of the Kostroma region contacted the duty station of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia in the city of Kostroma, reporting that she had purchased a boat motor through a well-known Internet service. The woman paid for the purchase by bank transfer in the amount of 110,000, but the purchase never arrived.

During the operational activities, criminal investigation officers found the trail of the attacker. As it turned out, a resident of the Ulyanovsk region built a business on deception. The 20-year-old swindler, from October last year to March 2023, posted information on the Internet on one of the popular free advertisement sites about the sale of a number of goods: outboard motors, motorized towing vehicles, snow blowers, welding machines. As soon as “Potential Buyers” were found, the deceiver offered to go to a well-known messenger, where he agreed on a deal and delivery with the help of transport companies.

As confirmation of the purity of his intentions, the seller sent a photo and video of the “purchase,” a false passport and all accompanying documents, including photographs of the invoice from the transport company, which he took by copying from the Internet. But, as soon as the money for the “bargain purchase” arrived from the buyer’s account, the seller blocked the SIM card and removed the ad from the sale.

Investigators from Investigative Department No. 6 of the Russian Ministry of Internal Affairs for the city of Kostroma were able to prove that in a similar way the attacker received over 3 million rubles from defrauded clients from another 33 victims from different regions of Russia. Charge of committing a crime under Part 2 of Art. 159 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation was also charged against his accomplice, born in 2002, who helped the swindler withdraw money from false accounts.
