At its core, NetHunter is an almost unchanged Kali Linux, installed "on top" of Android and running inside a chroot environment. It includes the same set of a huge number of well-known pentesting tools, as well as the XFCE graphical environment, which can be accessed from the smartphone itself, or from a laptop/computer/tablet using any VNC client.

The difference between NetHunter and "just installing Kali Linux in a chroot" is in several nuances. First, there is a graphical application for managing some of the distribution's features, such as running certain services or enabling a MANA access point. Secondly, it includes a small set of Android software that will be useful when performing attacks or working with the distribution: Hacker's Keyboard, Android VNC, DriveDroid, and others.

Third, for each supported device, NetHunter has its own custom kernel built with support for loading emulation of a USB keyboard or network adapter and mechanisms for introducing frames into the network stream (Wireless 802.11 frame injection). These functions are used to carry out attacks like BadUSB, Teensy, as well as to introduce various kinds of backdoors into files transmitted over the network (using the MANA access point and the Backdoor Factory tool).

Otherwise, everything is pretty standard, and anyone who is familiar with Kali will find a familiar environment and toolset here.: Aircrack, Maltego, Metasploit, SAINT, Kismet, Bluebugger, BTCrack, Btscanner, Nmap, p0f and many, many others.

Officially, NetHunter is guaranteed to work on the following devices:

- Nexus series smartphones and tablets (Nexus 4 (mako), 5 (hammerhead), 5x (bullhead), 6 (shamu), 6P (angler), 7P (flo), 9 (flounder), 10 (manta));

- OnePlus smartphones (OnePlus One (oneplusl), 2 (OnePlus2), 3 and 3T (oneplus3), X (oneplusx));

- Samsung Galaxy series smartphones (Note 3 (HLTE), S5 (kite), S7 (herolte), S7 edge (hero2lte));

- smartphones LG (G5 T-Mobile (h830), G5 International (h850), V20T-Mobile(h918), V20 US Unlocked (us996))

- HTC One M7GPE (onem7gpe) and HTC 10 (htc. pmewl);

- smartphones Sony Xperia ZR (dogo) and Sony Xperia Z (yuga);

- Nvidia SHIELD (shieldtablet) and SHIELD tablet K1 tablets;

- smartphone ZTE Axon 7 (ailsa_ii).

The second requirement is the Android 4.4.4 version; without adding "at least", and even with root access, a custom recovery console (TWRP or CWM, whatever) and at least 4.5 GB of free space. And to get the ability to sniff traffic and inject frames, you also need an external USB Wi-Fi network card, and not just any one, but the model that is supported in the kernel, as well as an OTG cable for connecting.
