What does the CISA, FBI, and NSA partnership have in store for protecting industrial infrastructure?

On October 10, the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Protection Agency (CISA), the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), the National Security Agency (NSA), and the U.S. Treasury Department presented recommendations to strengthen Open Source Software (OSS) security in Operational technology (OT) and industrial control Systems (ICS) environments.

According to the recently published CISA Open Source Security Plan, the recommendations include:
  • support for OSS development and maintenance;
  • managing and fixing vulnerabilities in OT/ICS environments;
  • addressing Cross-industry Cybersecurity Goals (CPGs) as a common framework for adopting key cybersecurity practices in relation to OSS.

In addition to the recommendations, CISA launched the OSS Protection in OT page, revealing the OSS Joint Cyber Defense Collaboration (JCDC) Planning Initiative — a priority in JCDC planning for 2023. This initiative promotes collaboration between the public and private sectors, including the OSS community, to better understand and secure the use of OSS in OT / ICS. This will help strengthen protection against cyber threats directed at OT / ICS.

CISA encourages organizations working in the field of OT / ICS to read these recommendations and implement the security measures proposed by the agencies.
