The developers of the crypto wallet warned that they didn't have the app, but it was already too late.

Developers of the popular Leather cryptocurrency wallet are sounding the alarm due to the appearance of a malicious fake app under their brand in the App Store. According to user reports, this application is a so-called cryptodrainer — it steals passwords and quickly empties wallets.

Drainers have become one of the main threats in the crypto sphere over the past year. These malicious programs use various tricks to force users to enter the SID password for their account. After gaining access, the attackers steal all the digital assets available to the victim: cryptocurrencies, NFTs, etc.

The surge in popularity of cryptodrainers is due to an increase in the number of fraudulent sites, advertising campaigns, and hacked accounts in social networks that attract users to phishing resources. Over time, a whole shadow market of "services" for the distribution of such malware has emerged, allowing anyone who wants to engage in illegal activities.

The Leather team emphasizes in its statement that they don't have an official iOS app yet. Those who have already entered the seed phrase are advised to immediately transfer all funds to another account.

Unfortunately, the first reports from users whose assets were stolen have already appeared. The real number of victims has not yet been disclosed, as well as the number of downloads. However, given the popularity of Leather among crypto enthusiasts, it is likely that there are already quite a lot of victims.

Even though Leather reported the issue more than a week ago, the fake Leather app is still available on the App Store with a rating of 4.9 out of 5. Many of the reviews left look extremely suspicious — they are very similar in style and content, which suggests that they are falsified.

The app was hosted by a certain user under the pseudonym "LetalComRu" and uses the Leather corporate logo, which is why many initially took it for the original.

Apple does not comment on the incident. Usually, the company responds quickly enough to such cases.

Experts recommend that you be extremely careful when installing applications for working with crypto assets. The best way is to go to the product page in the App Store only through the official website of the developer after verifying its authenticity. In the case of Leather, this is leather.io.
