The attackers placed ads for the sale of non-cleared cars on popular online platforms at a reduced cost, received money from customers, and then interrupted communication.
Investigators of the police department No. 4 (Sumy) of the Sumy District Police Department in cooperation with the Department of Combating Cybercrime in the Sumy region of the State Unitary Enterprise of the National Police of Ukraine and employees of the State Institution "Sumy Pre-trial detention center" under the procedural guidance of the Sumy Regional Prosecutor's Office reported suspicion to nine persons.
According to the investigation, four residents of Sumy region, while serving a sentence in the State Institution "Sumy pre-trial detention center" for committing property crimes, using Internet resources, published false ads about the sale and delivery of cars with foreign license plates. Ads at various times identified victims and, wishing to purchase vehicles, made a phone call to the specified phone number. In the course of communication with the victims, the attackers misled them and offered to transfer an advance payment to the card or pay for the car in full.
In addition, the suspects involved five more people who were at large in illegal activities. They provided prisoners with communications and performed banking operations with the funds of deceived citizens.
Currently, 22 victims have been identified, including servicemen of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, who were deceived by the perpetrators. The total amount of lost funds is about 265 thousand hryvnias.
All the defendants were charged under Part 3 and Part 5 of Article 190 (fraud committed on a particularly large scale or by an organized group) of the Criminal Code of Ukraine. The sanction of the article provides for punishment in the form of imprisonment for a term of five to twelve years with confiscation of property. The pre-trial investigation continues, and the exact number of victims of criminal activity of suspects is being established.
