Employees of the Department for Organizing the fight against the Illegal use of Information and Communication Technologies of the Main Directorate of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia for the city of St. Petersburg and the Leningrad region detained two suspects in embezzlement of citizens ' funds by fraud.
"According to investigators, a resident of Primorye, following the instructions of curators located on the territory of Ukraine, met a technical specialist from St. Petersburg on closed forums on the Internet. He created a website for the sale of expensive equipment for a monetary reward and promoted it in search engines on a daily basis using special algorithms. In addition, the man tracked and deleted negative reviews of victims, registered new domain names when blocking previous ones. At the same time, the resource did not change its functionality and content.
An online support chat and phone numbers were posted on the site, where customers received advice about the characteristics of imaginary goods, as well as information about payment details. After customers made a payment, the organizer of the criminal scheme stopped contacting them.
For the purpose of conspiracy, the accomplices used messengers, secret chats, as well as domain accounts registered in advance through proxy servers and SMS activators for figureheads, including those who were not aware of the use of their data," said Irina Volk, an official representative of the Russian Interior Ministry.
Mobile phones, bank and SIM cards, laptops, tablets and other items of evidentiary value were seized during searches at the residential addresses of the detainees.
Six criminal cases were initiated on the grounds of a crime under part two of Article 159 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation, which are combined into one proceeding.
"There are grounds to believe that accomplices may be involved in a series of similar crimes. In respect of a resident of Primorye, a preventive measure was chosen in the form of remand in custody. Her accomplice is under recognizance not to leave and proper behavior. The preliminary investigation continues, " Iryna Volk said.
