Already the third attack in recent years can significantly shake the company's business.
Hoya Corporation, one of the world's largest manufacturers of eyeglass lenses, medical endoscopes and other optical equipment, has experienced a major disruption in its IT system, affecting production facilities and the ordering system for some products.
The Tokyo-based company discovered the incident at its overseas office on March 30 and immediately brought in external cybersecurity experts. Preliminary findings indicate unauthorized access to the servers by third parties.
At the time of detection of the breach, Hoya immediately isolated the affected servers and reported the incident to the relevant authorities in the countries where the affected production facilities are located. The specifics of the incident and the possible use of ransomware programs currently remain without comment from the company.
It is worth noting that Hoya has already experienced similar attacks in the past, in 2021 and 2019. One of them led to the theft of 300 GB of confidential information, and the other to the suspension of the company's factory in Thailand for three days.
The company, which has more than 36,000 employees in over 30 countries and regions, reported revenue of approximately $ 5.5 billion for 2023. Hoya is now making every effort to meet the needs of customers and reduce the negative impact on them as much as possible. However, it is still unclear whether the breaches affected confidential or personal information.
The impact of this incident on the company's business performance has not yet been determined, but Hoya promises to immediately report any consequences as soon as they become known.
It should be noted that over the past year, among Japanese companies, not only Hoya faced a cyber attack. Fujitsu, Japan Aviation Electronics, Seiko, Casio, YKK and Eisai have also been targeted recently, highlighting the growing cybersecurity threat to large businesses in Japan.
