During a call with the US government, the cat turned off the systems for 4 hours.

The Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Kansas City, Missouri, USA, experienced a four-hour outage due to a cat that unexpectedly jumped on the keyboard of a technician.

According to sources, the incident occurred in September during one of the regular calls between the US government department and the CIO of the Center to discuss current problems in the IT sphere. Typically, these discussions involve about 100 professionals, including contractors, suppliers, and employees.

In one of these calls, a technician stated that while checking the configuration of the server cluster, his cat suddenly jumped on the keyboard, which led to data deletion. Anyway, that was the version of the technique he shared with The Register.

An official statement from the Center reads: "On September 13, 2023, the Kansas City Medical Center experienced a problem transmitting images in the Veterans Health Information Systems and Technology Architecture (VIST) system due to the accidental deletion of server profiles. The problem was quickly identified and fixed within four hours. The incident had no direct consequences for veterans."

In the statement of the Department of Veterans, there was no mention of the cat, and the department did not comment on the version with the cat. At the moment, we can only guess at the real cause of the incident, where the cat is both present and absent in different versions of the story.
