Cybercriminals in Asia have switched from stealing credit cards to stealing corporate documents.
The number of stolen Asian credit card numbers sold on the darknet has dropped sharply, cybersecurity company Group-IB said at the ATxSG conference in Singapore. Instead, attackers in the region have stepped up their attempts to steal corporate documents, with India becoming the main target.
The researchers found that criminals use botnets to steal 3,249,318 rows of data from Indian organizations in 2023, as well as compromise 413 corporate accounts. Indonesia ranked second in terms of the number of compromised documents – 1,950,951 using botnets. Vietnam was in second place in terms of the number of hacked accounts - 322.
Of the 100 data security breaches discovered by Group IB in the Asia-Pacific region, which resulted in the leak of more than 81 million records, 34 were from India and 22 from Indonesia. Taiwan ranked third with 6 entries. Data security breaches in the Asia-Pacific region are growing, showing a 27% annual increase.
In addition, out of 29 million More than 12 million compromised accounts sold on the darknet had top-level domains linked to India. Indonesia came in second with almost 4.4 million people. accounts. Most of the accounts were offered on the Russianmarketshop website (85%) and obtained using Raccoon stealer (73%).
Group IB noted that India, Indonesia and Vietnam were targeted by hackers because they are large countries and active users of information technology. But this does not mean that other countries are not attacked.
India does not top the list of countries where malware from Android overlay malware provider InTheBox is widespread. In this category, Australia leads the way with 34 mobile apps, followed by India with 33. Third and fourth places were taken by Japan (23) and Singapore (21).
InTheBox mainly promotes the spread of banking malware, so attacking richer countries like Japan, Singapore, and Australia means more revenue for criminals.
Group IB found that the shadow markets on the darknet have the most compromised corporate accounts and credit cards, the source of which is China.
Group IB specialists also found text and data dumps containing more than 213,000 APR credit cards put up for sale in 2023. This number is 10 times less than the number of cards for the same period in 2022. More than 62,000 were Australian credit cards, and more than 29,000 were Chinese ones.
The decline in the amount of credit card data sold on the darknet, coupled with an increase in data security breaches, can be interpreted as a further change in the business model of criminals-from attacks on individuals to more profitable targets such as businesses, governments, and other entities.
