British law enforcement officials reported that they were the victim of a ransomware attack that hit an unnamed third-party vendor. As a result, the leak affected the personal information of a number of employees. Last month, the London Police faced a similar problem.

According to a statement from Greater Manchester Police (GMP), the unnamed company affected by this attack is a service provider not only for law enforcement agencies, but also for other organizations throughout the UK.

At the same time, it is emphasized that the hacked systems did not contain financial data of police department employees, but the investigation of this ransomware attack and related data leakage is the highest priority, and the investigation is being conducted at the national level.

"We understand how much the incident concerns our employees, so in trying to understand the possible consequences for GMP, we have contacted the Information Commissioner's Office and are doing everything possible to ensure that employees are informed, their questions are answered, and they feel supported," the statement reads.

I must say that at the end of August this year, the London police also became the victim of a similar incident. Then it was reported that hackers gained access to the IT system of one of the suppliers of law enforcement agencies, and as a result, they became aware of the names, ranks, photos, results of inspections and data on the salaries of 47,000 police officers and employees of the metropolitan police.

In early September 2023, the British newspaper The Sun reported that hackers compromised the Digital ID company located in Stockport, which is engaged in the production of identification cards and passes. Soon, the company confirmed that they had indeed encountered an "incident", but so far they have not disclosed any details of what happened.

Although there is no official confirmation of this yet, information security experts believe that the GMP data leak may also be related to the compromise of Digital ID.
