The FCC gave the go-ahead, and the VR world will never be the same again.

Alphabet Inc. (owner of Google), Apple Inc. and Meta Platforms Inc. have received approval from U.S. regulators to launch a new set of mobile virtual and augmented reality devices, including glasses and in-car connectivity.

Gadgets received permission to use radio frequencies that are used by devices with Wi-Fi. The decision was made by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) in a unanimous 5-0 vote on Thursday.

"These are the radio waves on which we can develop new wearable technologies," said FCC Chairwoman Jessica Rosenworcel. "In other words, these are the radio waves on which the future takes place."

Apple, Meta, and Google are all working on augmented reality glasses and can use the 6 GHz band to connect to a smartphone, for example. Other important applications may include sharing navigation data between smartphones and the car, as indicated by companies in FCC filings.

"We welcome the FCC's decision to allow companies like ours to leverage new wireless technologies to create the next wave of computing," Kevin Martin, vice president of North American policy at Meta, said in a written statement.
