Finnish customs decided to show who is in charge here on the Internet.
Finnish law enforcement agencies have announced the elimination of PIILOPUOTI, a shadowy online marketplace specializing in the illegal drug trade, since May 2022.
The site functioned as a hidden service on the encrypted TOR network, Finnish Customs Authorities (Tulli) said on Tuesday. It is noted that the site was used for anonymous criminal activities, such as drug trafficking. According to the agency, the drugs sold on the site were transferred to Finland from abroad. A criminal investigation is currently underway involving international partners from Germany and Lithuania, as well as Europol and Eurojust. It is not known whether any arrests were made.
The Romanian company Bitdefender reported that it provided additional support, which helped in the confiscation of PIILOPUOTI. Alexandru Catalin Cosoy, Senior Director of Investigations and Forensics at Bitdefender, stated:: "This operation is a prime example of combining the resources of the public and private sectors to counter illegal online activities. It should also serve as a warning to criminals who mistakenly believe that their infrastructure and activities are fully protected on the dark web."
This development comes amid increased efforts by law enforcement agencies to eliminate shadowy Internet markets such as Genesis Market and Lolek hosting service. In May 2023, an international operation led to the arrest of 288 sellers who are considered participants in the drug trade on the Monopoly market.
