Law enforcement officers have declared suspicion to three members of an organized criminal group who appropriated other people's email mailboxes and Instagram accounts. The defendants face up to 15 years in prison.

The cyber police of Kharkiv region, together with the investigators of the State Police of the Kharkiv region under the procedural guidance of the Kharkiv Regional Prosecutor's Office, identified three intruders aged 20 to 40 years who stole email accounts and accounts of the social network Instagram of Internet users.

The defendants used the brute force method, that is, password selection by searching through a large number of passphrases using special software. You can protect your account from this type of hacking by setting up two-factor authentication and using strong passwords.

It was previously established that during the year of criminal activity, members of the group formed databases of stolen accounts of more than 100 million Internet users from around the world. The information will be checked during the investigation.

The defendants lived in different regions of Ukraine and contacted each other via the Internet. The organizer distributed responsibilities among performers, and the latter formed databases of hacked accounts and put them up for sale on the darknet.

According to operational information, the clients of intruders in the shadow segment of the Internet were mainly fraudulent groups. These communities bought compromised accounts for use in various fraudulent schemes, including "Friend asks for a loan".

Law enforcement officers conducted 7 searches at the places of residence and registration of the defendants in Kiev, Odessa, Vinnytsia, Ivano-Frankivsk, as well as Kiev, Donetsk and Kirovohrad regions. More than 70 pieces of computer equipment, 14 phones, bank cards and cash, including more than $ 3,000, were seized. A request to seize the seized property was sent to the court.

Investigators declared three members of the group suspected under Part 3 of Article 28, Part 5 of Article 361 (Unauthorized interference in the operation of information (automated), electronic communication, information and communication systems, electronic communication networks) of the Criminal Code of Ukraine. They face up to 15 years in prison.

Now the police sent a petition to the court to choose a preventive measure in the form of detention for the suspect.

Also, the version of cooperation of the defendants with agents of the aggressor country is being worked out, since the stolen accounts, in particular, were used to conduct IPSO in the interests of the Russian Federation.

Investigative actions continue. Additional qualification is possible based on the results.
