Data leaks can affect national security and international relations.

More than 500,000 internal documents and images, as well as 175 GB of SQL databases, were stolen from the system of the National Police of Paraguay (Policía Nacional del Paraguay).

Among the leaked data are documents from:
  • Dirección de Asuntos Internos;
  • Department of Identification (Departamento de Identificaciones);
  • Department of Registration of Foreigners (Departamento Registro de Extranjeros);
  • Department of Technology and Development (Division de Tecnologia y Desarrollo).

Due to the availability of Personally Identifiable Information (PII), such as photos of detainees and incident reports, the data is only available to journalists and researchers. They can apply for access to this data through a specialized query system.

Among the leaked data are not only administrative documents, but also photos of evidence, orders from the command, as well as information about wanted persons. A leak could seriously undermine the credibility of law enforcement agencies and endanger national security.

The Government of Paraguay has not yet commented on the situation, but sources within the police say an internal investigation has been launched. Experts believe that the leak could have occurred due to security flaws or be the result of targeted hacking.

Implications for society and the law enforcement system

The incident may have long-term consequences for public confidence in the police and the Government. In addition, data leaks can be used for blackmail, forgery of documents and other criminal activities, and can also complicate ongoing investigations and operations to combat crime.

Given that the leaked data includes information about foreign citizens, there may also be diplomatic problems. Some countries have already expressed concerns about the safety of their citizens.

The case of a data leak from the National Police of Paraguay calls into question the effectiveness and reliability of the country's security system. The authorities have launched an investigation, but the public demands full transparency and responsibility for what happened. An official statement from the Government of Paraguay is expected soon.
