What is the threat to a specialist in the security of classified data of betraying the motherland?

A U.S. Navy official, Wenheng Zhao, has pleaded guilty to selling U.S. military secrets to a Chinese spy.

The 26-year-old sailor, who lives in Monterey Park, California, now faces up to 20 years in prison for two federal crimes: conspiring with an intelligence officer of the People's Republic of China and accepting a bribe. The verdict will be handed down on January 8.

According to the US Department of Justice, Zhao worked at the naval base in Ventura, California, and had access to highly classified documents. The base specializes in the development of missiles, electronic warfare systems and other weapons. One of the duties of the Zhao was to ensure information security.

In court, Zhao admitted that in the period from May 2021 to August 2023, he received at least $14,866 in total for 14 bribes.

The spy received details of the Navy's military operations, information about critical US infrastructure, information about large-scale exercises in the Pacific Ocean, as well as diagrams and drawings of radar systems located on Okinawa in Japan.

Encrypted means of communication were used to exchange data, and the evidence was then carefully destroyed.

On August 3, another sailor, Jinchao Wei, was arrested. He was accused of spying on another naval base in San Diego.

Wei openly told his colleagues that he was recruited by Chinese intelligence, and in court described his activities as "obvious espionage" on behalf of Beijing.

Last week, a former US Army sergeant was detained after a document was found on his computer with the unambiguous title: "Important information for transmission to the Chinese government."
