They're treated as regular emails, like if it's going to name@gmail.com, it would be the same as sending it to n.ame@gmail.com, so it wouldn't go into the trash. I do this all of the time, especially on sites I've carded before and don't want to give away that it's me. :o

You'll be fine, like Ninja said, it's used for legitimate purposes as well.
